Orchard House receives gift
Thursday, May 4, 2006
From 3 to 5 p.m. this Sunday, May 7, Frame-ables, 111 Thoreau St., will host a very special event honoring the love affair between Concord artist Kristina Joyce and Louisa May Alcott's Orchard House. Free and open to the public, the afternoon will include refreshments and an art exhibition. At the reception, Joyce will officially donate an exquisite collection of original art to Orchard House. Her own words tell the story best: "Through the years Sally Cody, Museum Shop Manager at Orchard House, and I have shared many life experiences including our May 28. birthday. We met in the early 1980's when I left some of my calligraphy and drawings at the Orchard House for Sally to see. Afterwards, she asked if I might do a few pieces to sell as cards and frame-able reprints in the gift shop. Thus was born our business association and a wonderful friendship too. "Many of the pieces that I calligraphed and illustrated for Orchard House began as suggestions from Sally or from discussions that we had. We would talk about our personal joys and sorrows and comment on how a particular quote from Louisa would be expressive or helpful. Then we would decide how words might be portrayed in an art piece that others would use and/or enjoy. Quotations that we loved went through many stages of development. Something on a card might become a frame-able print, booklet, bag, or even a T-shirt. "During my child rearing years, the income that I received from Orchard House work was very helpful. I often said a little 'thank you' to Louisa's spirit when a check arrived. For some time now, Sally and I have often talked about doing something with the 'baby,' (the artwork) we have cared for. This year seemed to be a good time to gift Orchard House with the originals and the rights to reproduction. Sally and I love Orchard House and want the good that it does to continue. We hope that this gift will help." Frame-ables, now celebrating its 21st year, offered to exhibit the Joyce and Cody collection as well as host the May 7 reception because of a long-standing relationship with Joyce and its desire to support Orchard House.
