Potter visits Frame-ables Saturday
Thursday, November 2, 2006
Frame-ables Gallery and Frame Shop, at 111 Thoreau St., Concord, is hosting Cape Cod potter Sharon Schaffer on Saturday, Nov. 4 from noon to 4 p.m. Schaffer will demonstrate and talk about her techniques and inspiration in her pottery making.
Schaffer finds inspiration "from all over the place." Whether looking at a shelf of inexpensive dishes in a discount store or a one-of-a-kind vase at a gallery, her imagination is at work. Sometimes, shapes form in her mind, begging to be transformed into reality.
Influenced by the Impressionist art of the 19th century, Schaffer said she "loves to play with light." She has found several combinations of glazes that display great depth of color. The sand color of the clay peeks out from beneath a layer of luminescent white. Vibrant cobalt blue combines with black creating a visually light pottery. Green, brown and blue combine to create the impression of a stream running over stone.
Schaffer said her artistic vision is "About having a functional piece that is also a work of art."
